TCHI-TCHI (Caucasus), end of 19th century
The star of this rug is not the brick field, with old gold chess pieces, decorated with a seedling of small multicoloured plant compositions and Caucasian symbolism; but the five borders forming the frame. Two suites of polychrome flowers on diamond-shaped supports, set against bluish and old gold backgrounds, flank the main anthracite border with a succession of star-shaped flowers, segmented by "sticks" depicting the stems (typical of the "Chi-Chi" decoration). The frame is completed by an internal anthracite counter border with flowers and an external one with chess pieces, emerald and brick in positive/negative.
Nice visual set.
