A married priest. Paris, Achille Faure, 1865. 2 volumes in-12 (169 x 108 mm) of 4 ff.n.ch. 307 pp. for volume I; 2 ff.n.ch. 271, 48 pp. for volume II; brown half-maroonquin with corners, ribbed back, gilded edges (20th century binding). Clouzot, 39; Carteret, I, 110. Original edition. "This novel is presented in a buzzing and precise style, which captures the reader's imagination with the violence of a hallucination. Despite its arbitrariness, the work is so powerful in its invention that it is one of the most striking writings of the 19th century in France" (Laffont-Bompiani). Copy of the current print with the author's signature on the back of the false title of the first volume. Carteret indicates 8 catalogue pages for Volume I (which are not present) and by mistake 48 catalogue pages for Volume II which are "extracts from journals on André Léo's works". Last sheet of Volume II with tear and lower margin previously restored, some freckles. Origin: ex-libris with the motto inveni portum.
