This order of Mercedaries (Orden de la Merced in Spanish) is a redemptive religious order that was founded in 1218 in Barcelona by the French Pierre Nolasque associated with the Catalan Raymond de Penyafort.
He was in charge of the purchase of "the Barbarian captives". Many men fell into the hands of Moorish pirates during incursions into the Mediterranean and some of the religious of this Order were imprisoned and offered their lives in exchange for these Christian captives whose faith was in danger.
