Rare pair of important limestone bases carved in strong relief, gilded and polychrome decorated with the symbols of the Evangelists Mark and Luke. The winged animals, the lion and the bull, stand out from the background, each holding a gold shield with five pannels Vert on the stems above surrounded by a phylactery bearing the inscriptions in Gothic letters S. MARCHVS. EVAN - S. LVCVS. EVAN; bases with umbilicus and moulded upper edges. Burgundy, 15th century Marc, Height: 34.8 cm - Width: 59 cm - Depth: 51.5 cm Luc, Height: 34 cm - Width: 55.5 cm - Depth: 40 cm (some wear and tear and splintering) This iconography of a winged animal holding a banner as part of the architectural decoration is to be compared to the 15th century alabaster winged ox of Saint Luc probably from Burgundy in the Louvre collections (inv. RF 620, fig.). The coat of arms has been identified as belonging to the Salazar family of Spanish origin, which is made up of five leaves of gold with Vert leaves, several of which have marked the history of the kingdom and northern Burgundy. Tristan Salazar, son of John, a native of Spain, was Archbishop of Sens after having been prior of Marcheret (Marne) but also, among other things, knight and chamberlain of the king; he died in Troyes in 1479; Hector, his son, took over part of the same charges and was buried in the choir of the church of Saint-Just, near Macheret.
