Title and signature on the back The King returning to the Treport after visiting Le Véloce, August 1840/PFL Fontaine.
On August 17, 1840, Louis-Philippe, accompanied by several members of his family, ministers of war and navy and a large number of followers, embarked on the Véloce to cross the Tréport at Boulogne. A storm forced the Véloce to land in Calais. This episode, which could have ended in a tragic way, left its mark on people's minds. The king commissioned several watercolours commemorating this event from Thomas Sewell - Robins and Antoine - Léon
Moral - Fatio. The city of Calais had a painting executed by Alexandre Francia.
