The Battle of Joshua against the Amorrheans (Joshua, X. 12-14).
Oil on canvas.
100 x 140 cm.
A Roman painting composed in the manner of a high relief with a narrow foreground, probably from the first half of the 17th century, marked by the Battle of Alexander and Darius of the Capitol Museum of Pierre de Cortone (1597-1669) for the warrior with the raised dagger protecting himself from his shield, or Turnus' Death of the Palace Pamphilj (fresco), for the man on his knees, arm raised (Cf. Pietro da Cortona, catalogue of the Roma exhibition, Palazzo Venezia, 1997-1998, p. 71 & 96).
The theme of Joshua's battle, in which he implored Yahweh to stop the sun's course as the moon rises, was treated in a great composition by William and Jacques Courtois, preserved in the Quirinale in the Throne Room (Cf. Norbert Wibiral, Contributi alle ricerche sul Cortonismo in Roma. I Pittori della Galleria di Alessandro VII nel Palazzo del Quirinale, pp. 123-165 (fig. 13, pp. 133-134) - Bollettino d'Arte XLV, 1960).
Previously attributed to François Perrier (Burgundy (Saint-Jean-de-Losne ? 1594-Paris 1649) in his Roman period.
