El Libertador, Venezuelan military and political leader. Signed letter, signed « Bolivar », Guayaquil 21 August 1829, to Daniel Florence O’LEARY ; 2 pages and a half, in-4 format (splitting repaired (last leaf) ; letter mounted on a tab) ; in Spanish.
Important political letter at a pivotal moment when Bolivar sought to leave the presidency of Gran Columbia. Daniel Florence O’LEARY (1801-1854) was an Irish general and British diplomat appointed to Columbia. During the wars of independence in South America, he became the « aide » of Simon Bolivar. On 20 January 1830, during the opening of the Congress in Bogota destined to avoid the dissolution of Gran Columbia, Bolivar presented his resignation which was accepted on 4 May. He died on 17 December 1830. In this letter Bolivar presents his position to O’Leary and his quest for Columbia: he believes that it is better that he steps down and acts behind the scene for the good of Columbia. Cartas del Libertador. Memorias del general O’Leary, t. XXXI, pp. 483- 486
