Sébastien Stoskopff (1597-1657) was a still life painter who excelled at rendering materials, raising this work to the rank of a vanity.

A still life by the Alsatian-born master achieved a high result, but the sale also included works by two artists ahead of their time.

The Chateau of Versailles hastened to exercise its right of preemption to acquire a pen and ink drawing that tells its story. The French institution paid €1,995 for a Procession at Versailles, a work by Sébastien Leclerc (1637-1714), the king's ordinary engraver who died a year before Louis XIV.
