Pierre Matisse (1900-1989)

Sold today by an art lover who was a close friend of Pierre Matisse, this large charcoal and stump drawing was a preparatory work for a painting that was never completed.

A young woman friendly with artists was given a delightful hat by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, while Matisse limned an ode to a beautiful odalisque.

This large-format from 1939, preparatory work for an unfinished painting, was sold by an enthusiast who was a close friend of the dealer Pierre Matisse. It fetched  €520,800 Friday under the hammer of Drouot Estimations. A painting by Toyen also fetched €235,600 double its estimate.

From June to September, the Matisse Museum in Nice will devote an exhibition to the artist's son, entitled "Pierre Matisse, an art dealer in New York." In tribute to the man who defended European modern art in his American gallery, 69 works by 22 artists, including Chagall and Miró, will be presented.

The next two sales of autographs from the Aristophil Collection include a few items that have never come up for auction before, but also a collection of historic objects and some treasures, paintings and drawings.

Son of antique dealer Didier Aaron and brother of Hervé Aaron, who chaired the Syndicat national des antiquaires and the Salon du dessin, Olivier Aaron was a leading figure on the Paris market. He died on 25 November 2018.

Katia With A Yellow Shirt is the last oil on canvas painted by Matisse in Vence, in 1951. This bust of a woman on a yellow background, a "work of major interest," was acquired for €4.8 M from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. It joins the Lyon museum, already rich in works by the artist.

The Almine Rech Gallery in Paris delights with an exhibition of work by Tom Wesselmann, one of the leading Pop artists of the 1960s. Presenting work ranging from the late 1950s to the 2000s, the exhibition highlights the American artist’s life-long fascination with Henri Matisse.
