Lee Ufan (Né en 1936)

The South Korean artist has just opened his new art center, the “Lee Ufan Arles”, in the city of Arles in Provence. He maintains close ties with France and his Western public, which reciprocates his affection.

The new contemporary art space, created by Ufan’s foundation, takes up 3 floors of the Hôtel Vernon, which he discovered in 2016. Japanese architect and long-time friend of Ufan, Tadao Ando led the work on the building. The center spotlights both Ando and Ufan, while featuring works by Ufan and other artists (Le Monde)

Over forty years after it was produced, a work typifying the Korean artist's formal explorations is appearing on the market for the first time.

Lee Ufan Arles has just opened in the Hôtel Vernon, a hôtel particulier (private mansion) where his minimalist works are in their element. A look back at this sumptuous collection that embodies the essence of his philosophy.

The eighteenth-century Hôtel Vernon in the center of the historic town, invested in by Ufan and rehabilitated by architect Tadao Ando, will open next spring. It will be devoted to the minimalist art of the South Korean artist. In the meantime, Ufan has an exhibition opening in late October at the Alyschamps necropolis.

East Winds, a landmark work from the "Winds" series painted in 1984, fetched 3.1 billion WON - €2.26M, $2.66M- at a sale orchestrated by Seoul Auction on Tuesday. This is a record for a living South Korean artist at auction, a milestone already set by Ufan last June with a bid of €1.6 million.

Lee Ufan with this large, clean painting and Tom Wesselmann with his Big Study for Nude were the artists who garnered the highest bids at this special abstract and contemporary art sale.

After Dali, Warhol, Niki de Saint Phalle, Lee Ufan and Annette Messager, it is the British painter of Scottish origin, a major figure in contemporary art, that the first Grand Cru of Pauillac has chosen to design the label of the 2020 vintage. The result is a "dreamlike ode", a tribute "to the people of the earth".

Planned for the beginning of the year, the inauguration of its Parisian gallery dedicated to the second market will finally take place on September 7 at 8, avenue Matignon. On the five floors of the renovated mansion, works by Georg Baselitz, Alexander Calder, Lee Ufan & Donna Huanca (among others) will be on display.
