Lê Quoc Loc (1918-1987)

After having sold two works by Lê Quoc Loc on November 3, 2020 (€357,500) and then on May 4 (€260,000), Millon auctioned another of his screens, this time reaching €1,222,000 on October 21! It was painted in 1943 with polychrome lacquer in the red and gold colors of the Vietnamese flag.

A cabinet by Lê Quoc Loc fetched the highest bid, followed by ancient Chinese ceramics, which are still in demand.

This sale including works by Vu Cao Dam, Mai-Thu and Lê Quoc Loc featured two of Vietnam’s signature techniques.

The triumph of this Vietnamese polychrome lacquer was followed by other successes.

Two sales in Neuilly will celebrate the arts of Vietnam, from painting on silk to lacquerware, sculpture and porcelain.

For this fourteenth chapter of “Indochina, Myths and Realities 1800-1960,” the talented Tran Binh Loc is accompanied by Victor Tardieu, Mai-Thu and Lé Phô while Vu Cao Dam offers a beautiful message of hope.

It seems to be true that sales of Vietnamese art regularly achieve excellent results, setting ever more new records.

The son of Vietnamese painter Lê Pho died of cancer on September 17, as confirmed by someone close to the artist. Le-Tan collaborated with several magazines in France and the United States, including New Yorker and Vogue, and he was the subject of a 2004 retrospective exhibition at The Reina Sofia museum in Madrid.

Asian paintings were in the programme for auction house Aguttes’ sale on Wednesday October 9. The sale secured a new world record for Vietnamese Lê Van Dê, whose art deco-inspired screen fetched €399,160. His compatriot Mai Trung Thu achieved €392,780 with Femmes au bain.

Vu Cao Dam, Lé Phô and Victor Tardieu were joined by market newcomer Thang Tran Phenh, whose prices are already high.
