Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884)

A group of beautiful old photographs from an estate in Touraine, one of the traditional departments of France, will be auctioned off, starting with proofs by Gustave Le Gray.

This small treasure trove of photographs by leading exponents of the mid-19th century was recently discovered in a property in Touraine.

A large painting, featuring the wife of the famous photographer - exhibited at the 1853 Salon and kept by his descendants - has been rediscovered by auctioneer Marc Labarbe. It is one of the few paintings by Le Gray to have come down to us. It will be offered for €30,000/50,000 in Toulouse on September 17.

The Parisian museum has acquired, for €67,600, one of the rare paintings known to date of the famous photographer. The portrait of his wife Palmira, which made its first appearance at auction, was offered by Marc Labarbe in Toulouse, November 17.

Two natural, poetic works by the legendary husband and wife, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, stood on a pine table by Eileen Gray.

During this sale devoted to manuscripts and historical photographs, a few passages from the first French romances resurfaced, as did an album by French photographer Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884).
