Bernard Molitor (1755-1833)

Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Maurice Garnier Gallery, this 1972 landscape once again illustrates Bernard Buffet's penchant for urban views.

Eleven works by French artist Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) will be presented in Rennes at the dispersal of a collection of about 100 paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The highlight of this sale was a sweeping cityscape dominated by the famous Gothic cathedral’s soaring silhouette, but it also included some legendary automobiles.

The return to the classical order of a former fervent avant-gardist was acclaimed by the bidding.

"Eclecticism" was the term applied to this sale in Nice. It featured a horse by Mata, a mantelpiece by Majorelle and above all a mournful clown by Buffet, which certainly moved collectors.

“Objects do not belong to you,” says Bernard De Leye. “They are just passing through.” The time has come for the Belgian antique dealer and former BRAFA president to pass his collection on to the next custodian. Over 250 pieces, including several of museum quality, are up for sale.

At Whitechapel Gallery in East London, the German painter Kai Althoff’s exhibition pays homage to the British Potter Bernard Leach’s (1887-1979) influence on his practice.

The oil on canvas by the German master from Memmingen, long considered lost, was sold for €3.4 million at Artpaugée in Toulouse in February 2022. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, which owns its counterpart, has just been confirmed as the buyer. The two works are now reunited there.

In this sale devoted to the decorative arts, a mirror with brilliant ornaments illustrated the work of the cabinetmaker from southern France, and was accompanied by a pair of pistols by Devisme.

It is hard not to be moved by this Émile Bernard painting, or rather by the little girl wrapped in a shawl with her doll by side.
