Abraham Mignon (1640-1679)

Aiming to demonstrate his virtuosity, Noël Hallé painted his vision of this episode in the biblical patriarch’s life for the 1763 Salon. A work of true bravery, this painting bears witness in a new, softer way.

Abraham Thomas will take on the new role, working to link and contextualise developments across the three fields through curation at the Met’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art. Thomas has worked at the Smithsonian, Sir John Sloane’s Museum and the V&A, and has published extensively on art and design.

A pioneer of kinetic and optical art, artist Abraham Palatnik, died from complications related to coronavirus at the age of 92 in Rio de Janeiro. His first “kinechromatic device”, Kinechromatic Device, Objeto Cinecromático: Azul e Roxo em Primeiro (1949), was featured in the first São Paulo Bienal in 1951.

This 16th-century scene with Abraham and Melchizedek is the work of Flemish Mannerist Jan II Van Coninxloo.

“The Written Word: Timeless Arabic & Hebrew Calligraphy” runs until June 26 at Cambridge’s Woolf Institute. On display are artworks by Joumana Medlej, Michel D'Anastasio and Maaida Noor, featuring Muslim, Christian and Jewish texts to show “the interlaced nature of the three Abrahamic traditions". (BBC)

Found in a chateau in Poitou, the artwork by the Dutch painter, a pupil of Rembrandt, is one of his largest canvases (4.5 x 5.7 ft). Pharaoh Returning To Abraham his Wife Sarah, estimated between €60,000/80,000, will be auctioned January 26, 2021, in Nantes by the Ivory Group. 

The Swiss watchmaker’s partnership with Frieze began at the Frieze New York art fair, which ended yesterday. The “Breguet Lounge” presented the guilloche tool which was introduced in watchmaking by Abraham-Louis Breguet ca. 1786. There were also artworks by Pablo Bronstein, who collaborated with the brand. The statue, which features President Abraham Lincoln standing over a kneeling newly-emancipated Black man, was removed from Boston’s Park Square after city officials agreed that it “perpetuates harmful prejudices and obscures the role of Black Americans in shaping the nation's freedoms”.
