A grand master of Spanish baroque, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo left behind a rich body of religious painting, tinged with both realism and mysticism. Several variations of this Madonna of the Rosary came out of his workshop.

The master from Seville painted at least four other versions of the Madonna of the Rosary , in addition to the one at Museo del Prado. Two of them are especially similar: ours and the Madonna housed, since 1822, at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, a gift from Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Lorraine.
