Success for a Gainsborough Landscape

Published on , by Vanessa Schmitz-Grucker

On May 8 in Monte Carlo, HVMC sold an unusual oil on canvas by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) that had never come up for auction before: Landscape with Farmer, Milkmaid and Cows in front of a Cottage.

  Success for a Gainsborough Landscape

Appraised and estimated at €150,000 by Éric Turquin, the painting was influenced by Dutch realism, notably Jacob Van Ruisdael, and sparked a bidding war that climaxed at €590,000. The poetic landscape, with its free brushstrokes and light palette, belonged to the prestigious Hudson Collection in the Villa Paloma, now the musée d'art moderne de Monaco.
