Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964), original layout of the cover of the January 1937 issue of House & Garden magazine, pencil, India ink and watercolour, 35 x 26.7 cm.
Result: €3,072

Pierre Brissaud needs no introduction in France. He not only illustrated fashion and a certain kind of lifestyle from 1910 to 1940, but also made humorous sketches of elegant women. The small studio collection of his original drawings and etchings on sale at the Friday 10 May auction at Drouot of the Delon-Hoebanx auction house recalled the light, nicely turned touch that foreign magazines (Vogue, Vanity Fair, etc.) liked so much. Bidders also discovered a real find: the original layout of the cover of the January 1937 issue of House & Garden. This watercolour offered a different, much more modernist perspective on a long career, like the villa at the center of the composition. It obtained the highest series’ price, €3,072.
