In the grand residences of Constantinople, whether palaces or a yali—a waterfront pleasure home—from the reception rooms to the harem, every item was carefully made, often for daily use. Following the example set by the court of Topkapi, colorful Iznik ceramics, whose golden age was the first half of the 16th century, were the most valued items. The finest furniture, chests, Koran stands and hammam plinths are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. There are also some rarities connected to cultural habits, such as silver sprinklers and elegant turban stands in a Rococo style borrowed from Central Europe.
