Ngil Mask: The Uniform of Power in Fang Society

The Ngil mask was a tool of judicial power in traditional Gabonese Fang societies until the early 20th century. Used during purifying rites, only a very few examples have come down to us.

With its huge, domed, semi-spherical forehead opening into a heart-shaped design, refined volumes, a disproportionately long nose, barely incised small eyes and a mouth merging with the chin, there is no doubt that this is one of the very rare Ngil masks, named for the secret society that officiated within Gabon's Fang ethnic group until the 1920s.…
