According to Artprice, René Magritte has become the most successful or "high-performing" modern artist in the market, even rising to fifth place in its world ranking in the summer of 2022. In March, the Belgian Surrealist made headlines at Sotheby's London with a 1961 painting from his "Empire of Lights" series, which sold for $79.8M including fees, $19M above its estimate ($60M). This was three times his previous record, $26.8M, set in 2018 by Sotheby's for The Pleasure Principle (1937). The Artprice index thus indicates an 81% rise in Magritte's price index between 2012 and 2022, and 678% over the last 20 years.
