Jacques Lipchitz was born in Lithuania and arrived in Paris in 1909. In 1961, he moved to a place near Carrara, Italy, not far from the famous Tommasi foundry. In the following years, the foundry produced several editions of the artist's works and re-editions of earlier ones, such as guitar Player in Armchair, the original of which dates to 1922. As a tribute to the great masters of Cubism Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, in this sculpture Lipchitz took up one of the first themes treated by the two initiators of the movement.

While attending the Académie Julian, Lipchitz was a regular visitor to the Montparnasse neighborhood but did not take an interest in Cubism until 1913‑1914 after seeing the "Section d’or" exhibition and meeting Picasso. He then decided to undertake the challenging exercise of translating Cubism into three dimensions. In 1914, he presented a proto-Cubist sculpture, Marin à la guitare (Sailor with a guitar), now at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His 1920 version of l’Homme à la guitare (Man with a Guitar) was so successful at his dealer’s, Léonce Rosenberg, that he continued the series, notably with Joueur de guitare (Guitar Player in Armchair) two years later. Although Lipchitz turned to new forms of expression in 1925, he said, "When I am asked when I stopped being a Cubist, which happens often, my answer is always the same: never!"
