The history of textiles in India stretches back to the dawn of time. The secrets of decorating cotton cloth and cashmere shawls have been handed down from one generation to the next. In the late 16th century, the first printed fabrics imported to Europe came from India. In a society accustomed to heavy wool and silk fabrics, their delicacy met with so much success that in 1686 the marquis de Louvois, one of Louis XIV’s ministers, banned them from France in order to protect the country’s products. This had exactly the opposite effect, and Indian fabrics became more popular than ever. By the 19th century, cashmere shawls had become an indispensable fashion accessory.
