With its head tucked into its ruffle and its distinctive single foot, the wader with its well-known silhouette is much sought after by admirers of the iconoclastic sculptor.
François-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008), Petit échassier (Small Wader) lamp, patinated, welded wrought copper, patinated bronze and frosted glass diffuser, signed with the monogram "F.X.L.", with the editor's stamp, Artcurial, 30 x 36 x 12 cm/11.8 x 14.2 x 4.7 in.
Result: €75,840
François-Xavier Lalanne's genius for adapting animal forms to both utilitarian and decorative objects led him to choose the wader for several lamp models, where a white frosted glass diffuser turns the bird's curvy body, perched high on its leg, into a light source. This is also the case with a floor lamp in patinated, welded wrought copper with bronze additions, also patinated. Naturally, this is an Artcurial edition, for which Lalanne created this "small' model in around 1990 with a single foot (the large version has two). 1,500 copies were made, including the one here, numbered "54/1500". Bought in December 1994 by its last owner, the sculpture-object has not lost its playful charm and garnered €75,840, meeting all expectations.
