This diplomat had brought back numerous treasures from his distant travels: Buddhas from Japan and Tibet, Indian and Khmer statuary and a wide range of the traditional Chinese furniture and accessories that once adorned scholars’ homes. This exquisite part of the collection included two extraordinary late 19th century large lacquered wooden stands. One in red and black tianqi lacquer, with an incised decoration featuring scholars’ rocks, soared all the way up to €94,200 after a modest estimate of €300…
