André Devambez (1867-1944), À la plage (At the Beach), oil on panel, 8.5 x 14.5 cm/3.3 x 5.7 in. Paris, V.V. Room, September 16, 2020. Millon auction house. Ms Ritzenthaler.
André Devambez emerged in the heart of the Belle Époque on the fringe of major artistic movements, leaving a copious corpus with an unbridled imagination, whose modernity dazzles today. A painter, engraver and illustrator, he represented scenes of the life of his times, giving them a personal touch. His "little ones"—as he liked to call them—were sometimes painted on small wood panels, which he filled with a host of anonymous miniatures. He gave his compositions a singular dimension, making play with plunging perspectives and dynamic diagonals. His primarily anecdotal paintings only reveal their true character on a second reading, for while decorative and almost always humorous, they can also be highly critical.
