Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), Étoile model floor lamp, proof in brown-black patinated bronze with light hints of antique green, signature on one of the legs, numbered "AG 045" by the Giacometti Committee, h. 148 cm/58.3 in.
Result: €207,400

The eagerly-awaited floor lamp by the star sculptor of Montparnasse fetched €207,400, far above its high estimate of €120,000: the second-highest price yet achieved by this Étoile model (source: Artnet). This brown-black patinated bronze proof, with subtle hints of antique green, is signed on one of the legs and numbered on the shaft by the Giacometti Committee. The piece with its uncluttered, archaic style, dating to around 1936, perfectly illustrates the minimalist trend set by Jean-Michel Frank. The creator of Walking Man, assisted by his brother Diego, collaborated with the great designer starting in 1929 and through to the eve of the Second World War.

Some much more affordable paintings soon found new owners, like a characteristic winter landscape by Eugene Galien-Laloue, showing Paris, la Madeleine, le marché aux fleurs (Paris, the Madeleine Flower Market). The small (19 x 31 cm/7.5 x 12.2 in), skilfully painted scene in gouache on paper garnered €7,686. The more socialite feminine world typical of Delphin Enjolras was also within reach with a pastel Le Retour du bal (After the Ball): a pretext for a new study of the artificial light of the lampshade. This went for €6,344.
