A Sanguine by the Famous French Sculptor Pajou

Published on , by Vanessa Schmitz-Grucker

Here Antoine Pajou (1730-1809) produced what might be a sketch for a fountain, never finally executed.

A Sanguine by the Famous French Sculptor Pajou

This 1760 sanguine with white highlights and gouache on paper (35 x 51 cm/13.8 x 20 in, €35,000) shows the god Pan surrounded by tritons, nereids and a bevy of putti. Pajou, one of France’s most famous 18th-century sculptors, is known for his contribution, alongside the eminent sculptor Jean Goujon, to the sculptures in the Fontaine des Innocents in Paris. His name is sure to work its magic at the Fernando Duran Auction House sale in Madrid, Spain, on June 29.
