When Auguste Rodin donated the work to the French State in 1916, L'Âge d'airain  ( The Age of Bronze ) was a highly esteemed bronze work. However, its path to glory was decidedly arduous. The sculptor began work on it in early 1875. He was still living in Brussels, where he had followed his teacher, Carrier-Belleuse in 1871, at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. But the young Rodin was struggling to establish his work. However, a glimmer of hope appeared with the acceptance of his Man with the Broken Nose at the 1875…
