U.S. Democracy

On 24 June 2019, by Agathe Albi-Gervy

When American art is not social, it is political. Americans are passionate about power, propaganda and democracy.

Shepard Fairey (né en 1970), MLK - Martin Luther King, 2004, spray painted stencil and mixed media on paper, 112 x 76 cm. Paris, Drouot, 14 December 2014. Digard auction house.

During the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to help struggling artists by funding thousands of their works. Since then, they have given their work a political and social slant. Pop art is one of the aesthetics their contemporary descendants use to denounce political power, as in portraits of George Bush. They also take up the slogans of 1960s-1970s. The Vietnam and Iraq wars fuelled dissident works counterbalancing government propaganda, while citizens rush to buy historical memorabilia at auctions.
