Robert Morris: The Perceiving Body

The Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole is celebrating Robert Morris (1931-2018), its favorite artist since 1974, with an exhibition of his work dating from 1961 to 1977. Visitors, who are put off by the bare aesthetics of this icon of American minimalism and post-minimalism will surely be won over by the monumental aluminum piece Untitled, from 1968, in the center of the lobby. Seven spaces offer a reflection on his most notable works with a theatrical "stage presence", for which Morris was criticized at the time. In the first room, Untitled (3Ls), a triple repetition of a simple geometric module, immediately engages visitors through the pieces' size, position and lighting. The "Feutre" [Felt] series emphasizes the many possibilities of representing a form with cut-up industrial material, engendering an almost organic universe. The whole show is based on the instantaneous relationship to these environments, the studied effects of spreading the pieces out on the floor, such as Untitled (Scatter Piece), optical multiplication and endless projection of images through an interplay of mirrors, light and spaces to cross. Co-produced with Mudam Luxembourg, the exhibition includes prestigious loans and has been recognized as being of national interest. It is a must-see exhibition.
