La Liseuse (The Reader), a 1926 pastel on canvas (98 x 78 cm/38.58 x 30.71 in) estimated €10,000/12,000, has remained until now in the hands of a family related to the artist, Firmin Baes (1874–1943). The master of Impressionist technique painted a moving portrait of his wife in the garden of their Faux-les-Tombes estate. Its realistic lines and palette of soft Art Nouveau tones sum up the Belgian naturalism that was his heritage. Baes was a noteworthy portraitist whose works can be found in museums in Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges and Courtrai. This one ranks among many others representative of the Belgian School that will be part of the Horta sale in Brussels on October 11.
