Lazar Lissitzky, known as El Lissitzky (1890–1941), Merz-Matinéen, Tivoli Room in Hanover on December 30,1923, letterpress poster on red paper, 22.8 x 28 cm/8.98 x 11.02 in.
Result: €19,588

Jacques Périer, who is passionate about the history of the Russian avant-garde from Wassily Kandinsky to Alexander Rodchenko, decided to sell his collection. Two prints by Hungarian theorist László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) from 1922 and 1923, and two paintings on wood, Komposition (29.9 x 26.4 cm/29.9 x 26.4 in each), fetched €13,650 and €16,900, respectively. The session was dominated by the consequential results obtained by El Lissitzky, presented with several documents, starting with €19,588 for a red letterpress poster for the "Merz Morning" organized by Kurt Schwitters and Raoul Hausmann in Hannover, December 30, 1923 (reproduced). The piece (see photo), announcing the program, various Dada performances and a reading of the poem Anna Blume, is rare: only one other is known, in the collection of the Berlinische Gallerie. A Suprematist lithograph depicts the "Proun," the artist’s "project for the affirmation of the new", the heart of his art. From 1920 to 1923, all his works were entitled "Proun". Ours bears the number 5A (45.4 x 37.2 cm/25.59 x 14.64 in) and, like the others, combines two- and three-dimensional elements on a flat plane, creating dynamic tensions. From the Victory Over the Sun album, another lithograph (53.5 x 45.4 cm/21.06 x 17.87 in), Totengraber (The Gravedigger), sold for €15,860.
