While working in finance, Murrell attended art history classes in which she was perturbed by black figures being overlooked, providing the basis for both her doctoral dissertation at Columbia University and the exhibition she created from her research; the highly acclaimed "Posing Modernity: The Black Model from Manet and Matisse to Today" ran in Columbia’s Wallach Art Gallery and later in an expanded format at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 2018-19.
