Born in Nigeria in 1973, Gerald Chukwuma (a graduate of the University of Nigeria, where he met El Anatsui) is now considered one of the most dynamic artists in his country.
His large-scale sculptures are exhibited in Ghana, Cameroon, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Turkey and the USA. As Artprice tells us, his works entered the auction circuit ten years ago. Every year since 2010, ArtHouse Contemporary, an art center in Lagos, has auctioned one or two of his works, consolidating his official price index, which reached a peak of $15,000 for the largest of his burnt wood creations. While no sales were listed in 2020, Bonhams and Piasa promoted him in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Of his sixteen works sold at auction since 2009, ten (63%) are in the $5,000/10,000 range.
