Richard Oelze

Estimate :
8 000 - 12 000 EUR

Richard Oelze (1900 Magdeburg - Gut Posteholz/Hameln 1980) - drawing (Kohre series 1959/3). Black chalk on wove paper by Schlöbcke. (1959). Approx. 45 x 62 cm. Signed lower right. With handwritten inscriptions and numbering verso. Schmied/Damsch-Wiehager Z 120. Richard Oelze is one of the most important representatives of German Surrealism. Oelze's oeuvre fascinates with surreal landscapes populated with chimera-like creatures, which he paints with great technical perfection and attention to detail. With the finest nuances and tonal gradations, he lends his compositions a characteristically enraptured mood. After studying under Johannes Itten at the Bauhaus in Weimar and traveling several times, Oelze lived in Paris from 1933 to 1936, where he met the Surrealists Breton, Éluard, Dalí and Max Ernst. From then on, he had a lifelong friendship with Ernst. Oelze now found his very own world of expression in the surrealist visual language. His painting "Erwartung", created in Paris in 1935/36 - a work full of uncanny foreboding - was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York as early as 1940 (see Schmied 12). After the caesura of the Second World War, Richard Oelze, who had been living in seclusion, received the recognition he deserved thanks to the retrospective initiated by Wieland Schmied at the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover. Oelze was subsequently represented at the Documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale and received numerous art awards and honors. The chalk drawing from the expressive "Kohre series" offered here comes from the estate of Richard Oelze's long-time collector friend Siegfried Poppe and his wife Gesche in Hamburg.
