Luc Peire was born in Bruges, Belgium, in 1916. After studying at the Beaux-Arts in Bruges and Saint-Luc in Ghent, and at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, he embraced Flemish Expressionism, collaborating with painter Constant Permeke from 1935. In 1949, he married Jenny Verbuggen, who supported him throughout his career. After briefly joining the Jeune Peinture Belge group, he turned to geometry with the support of painter, writer and art critic Michel Seuphor. Luc Peire moved to Paris in 1959. In the 60s, he invented his Graphies: contrasting stripes of thicker or thinner lines. Referring to the verticals, he says that "man only exists standing up". He was awarded the Gravina Prize at the 1968 Venice Biennale. The artist traveled and exhibited extensively throughout the world. Luc Peire died in Paris in 1994. The following year, the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Anvers devoted a major retrospective to his work. The Atelier Luc Peire - Fondation Jenny et Luc Peire in Knokke, Belgium, which opened to the public in 2003, was created in the artist's will. "Always unique, Luc Peire's painting is conceived with weight, and has allowed itself to be gently and consciously invaded by the vertical, without any bias. He paints far from violence, ignoring aggression. This explains the secret modulations that are often so gentle in a painting devoid of severity. Soothing, almost "pacifist", it symbolizes freedom. This unconditional freedom stems from the fact that Luc Peire is nobody's heir. Patrick-Gilles Persin, Catalogue of the Luc Peire exhibition at the Musée du Luxembourg.
