Pierre-Auguste RENOIR (1841-1919). Fish. Painting on glazed ceramic plate. D : 22.5 cm. Note: Probably painted around 1906-1907 in André Metthey's studio. At the 1907 Salon d'Automne, André Metthey presented works resulting from his collaboration with painters such as Maurice Denis, Maurice de Vlaminck, Henri Matisse and Georges Rouault. Indeed, around 1906, at the instigation of art dealer Ambroise Vollard, he invited some twenty contemporary painters to his Asnières studio to decorate his stanniferous earthenware pieces. This collaboration between Metthey and the painters soon came to an end. Only three Renoir ceramics were ever auctioned. On this subject, read "Souvenirs d'un marchand de tableaux" by Ambroise Vollard, Albin Michel, 1984 (p. 426). Provenance: - Ambroise Vollard Collection - Private Collection Paris (Vollard descendants) - Christie's Paris sale of March 23, 2018 "Ambroise Vollard : L'oeil dune légende" (catalog no. 238)
