Claudio Francesco Beaumont (Turin 1694 - 1766) and workshop of Allegory of Literature Oil on canvas 79.5 x 63.5 cm The canvas is in pendant with the previous lot. Given the attributive considerations of the work with which it pairs it too should be attributed to Claudius Francis Beaumont. Protected by the Savoy princes Victor Amadeus II and Charles Emmanuel III, he initially trained in Turin with the Jesuits. In 1716 he went to Bologna where he became interested in local painting and in particular Carlo Cignani, the classicism of Annibale Carracci and his pupils. Later he was in Rome reinforcing his classicist streak in Francesco Trevisani's atelier. Back at the Savoy court he was entrusted with demanding and prestigious decorations for the most important residences. At the Royal Palace he painted the ceiling with the Chariot of Dawn and in 1738 he decorated the great gallery, now called Beaumont, home of the armory. In 1737 he went to Venice, where he had the opportunity to review the works of Sebastiano Ricci, Giambattista Crosato and Giovanni Battista Pittoni, artists already known from their work in Turin. The success of his painting with the Savoy family earned him the appointment of "First Painter of His Majesty" and the commission to execute many altarpieces for major churches in Turin, including those for the Basilica of Superga and the Church of the Carmine.
