Francesco Capella (Venice 1711 - Bergamo 1774) Blessed Gregory Barbarigo raises the Eucharist (?) Oil on canvas 60 x 45 cm Among the various works that can be cited for attributive comparison we highlight the proximity of the head of Blessed Guido Vagnotelli of the Immaculate Conception altarpiece with Blessed G. Vagnotelli, Saint Margaret and Souls in Purgatory, and the profile of Saint Gregory, from the series of Doctors of the Church, preserved in the church of SS. Nazario and Celso in Urgnano. He was a pupil and collaborator of Piazzetta until the master's death in 1754. Already a few years earlier he began his independent activity; in the year 1749, through Count Giacomo Carrara, he began commissions in Bergamo, which earned him much recognition in the city, such that he left Venice and settled, in 1757, permanently in the Lombard city. While firmly attached to his master, he enriched his pictorial art by making the influences of the Venetian masters his own: he incorporated luminous elements of Sebastiano Ricci, a certain virtuoso material fluidity characteristic of Francesco Guardi, and the new scenic grandeur of Giambattista Tiepolo.
