Dirck Hals (1591 - Haarlem - 1656) - Interior with tricktrack players and a couple drinking wine.
Oil on wood. (1620/30s). 28.8 x 43.3 cm. Framed.
The interior shows four people gathered around a table, each in pairs. Two of the gentlemen are engrossed in a game of trick-taking, a kind of backgammon, while on the left a lady is amusing herself with her neighbor, who is sitting out a game, and offers him a glass of wine. The motif of the two men leaning over the gaming table can also be found in other paintings by Dirck Hals (see Dirck Hals (together with Dirck van Delen), Celebration in a Renaissance Hall, 1628, Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem, inv. no. 75-318). Britta Nehlsen-Marten pointed out the unusual compactness of the figures for Hals and placed the work in the artist's circle. The painting is registered at the RKD, The Hague, under the illustration number 0000193790 (as Dirck Hals).
