Jacques MOULINIER (1757-1828). View of Neptune's grotto, near Montpellier, with a draftsman. Walnut panel wired on the back. Height 46.5 - Width 38.4 cm Monogrammed lower left Inscribed on the back: Js Movlinier . Pt.1812 / exhibited the same year at the Salon du Louvre / under n°667- to his friend Dartis. Provenance: Collection of Laure Pellicer, art history professor and co-editor of the catalog François-Xavier Fabre: de Florence à Montpellier, author of a doctoral thesis on the painter. This is in fact a view of the banks of the Lez, with the village of Montferrier on the horizon, and a rocky arch in the foreground, which considerably transposes the topographical reality. The equally fanciful name of "Grotte de Neptune" (Neptune's Grotto) must be inspired by the site of the same name in Tivoli.
