ADANSON (Michel). Famille des plantes. Paris, Vincent, 1763. 2 volumes in-8, [4], CCCXXV-189 p., 1 unfolded plate +[2]-24-[4]-640 p., brown marbled calf, ornate ribbed spines, red and green morocco titles and greefs, red edges (binding worn, some spotting, spine of volume 2 missing. Small hole on p. 169 vol. 1, wetness on p. 1, small marginal loss on p. 575)
First edition of this important treatise in which the author, French botanist Michel Adanson (1727-1806), proposes a new classification of plants. It is also curious from the point of view of the spelling used, arguing for simplification, as evidenced by the subtitle of the first volume: "Contenant une préface istorike sur l'état ancien & actuel de la Botanike, & une téorie de cette science".
The illustration includes a folding plate with figures relating to the construction of different types of greenhouses, accompanied by explanations.
