Important Oriental-style senior officer's saber by Boutet in Versailles
Finely checkered ebony handle. Chased and gilded brass "à la Marengo" mounting. Cap in cachet with double-chain guilloche guard (broken and missing from a cutout in the skirt), two rhombic aurillons and two "S"-shaped quillons ending in tassels. Strongly curved Arabic damascus grip blade with engraving remains on the heel, mitered.
Black chagrin scabbard with silver metal stitching and three gilded brass fittings:
- Chape en un bracelet à décor de vannerie and bracelet simulé à décor d'oves,
Signed "Mfture à Versaille ENtse Boutet". Blued steel entry blade. Pan-shaped studs.
- A bracelet with oval decoration.
- A plain iron stinger.
The piton is lengthened in view of the strong curvature of the blade, in order to spread the blued steel blade sufficiently.
Consulate period.
A.B.E.
(small dents, chips at top of handle).
This saber model is referenced in Michel Pétard's "Des sabres et des épées", Tome I, figure 158, as a senior officer's model made on his return from Egypt.
