Italian School. 16th century.
Important pair of temples on serge.
288 x 176 cm and 293 x 194 cm.
They are made from two engravings by Albrecht Durer.
We identify one of them, 'The Knight, Death and the Devil', made in 1513-14. It is one of the three Master Engravings of the German Renaissance, three engravings connected to each other as each of them corresponds to one of the three types of virtue of medieval scholasticism: theological, intellectual and moral. In addition to the one already mentioned, which was the creative basis for one of the two temples we present, the other two engravings are 'St. Jerome in his study' and 'Melancholy I'. A copy of 'The Knight, Death and the Devil' is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. 43.106.2).
It should be noted that the twills have lost their color intensity.
Provenance: Disappeared Palace of Isabel la Católica in Arévalo.
