Jusepe de Ribera (1588-1656)

This unusual painting by Neapolitan artist Jusepe de Ribera found a second youth and broke a French record.

The theme of the apostle's repentance, one of the most powerful in the Italian Counter-Reformation, is masterfully illustrated here by Jusepe de Ribera.

A splendid find—a Ribera in fine condition, signed, dated and with a wax seal with Cardinal Flavio Chigi's arms—is now making its auction debut.

The highlight of yesterday's sale at Gros & Delettrez, the repentant Saint Peter by the Spanish artist Jusepe de Ribera (1588-1656) soared up to €1,430,000. Never seen on the art market, it comes from the collection of Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1631-1693) and that of Blaise Léon Rochette de Lempdes (1809-1876).

Don’t be surprised if this portrait of Dioscorides reminds you of another. A pupil in Jusepe de Ribera’s studio painted it.

The "Œuvres Choisies" exhibition is up at the Hôtel Drouot until November 9 from 11am to 6pm, every day except Sunday. The centerpiece of this exhibition, a delicate Repentant Saint Peter signed and dated by Jusepe de Ribera will be auctioned at Gros & Delettrez on December 13 (€200,000/300,000).
