Morgan Colt (1876-1926)

This camera inspired by the pistol of the American Samuel Colt was patented by an Englishman, Mr. Thompson, and manufactured in around 1862 by a Parisian chemist who belonged to the Société Française de Photographie.

The Morgan Library & Museum in New York was bequeathed the extensive collection by cultural benefactor and museum patron Jayne Wrightsman, who started amassing the elaborate bindings and books in the late 1960s to complement her fine furnishings. Included are 19 manuscripts, 149 printed books and 10 watercolours.

New York's prestigious Morgan Library has completed a $13 million restoration of its iconic 1906 Charles Follen McKim-designed building, in addition to the construction of a new adjacent garden. The 450-square-foot green space houses sculptures from the collection.
