Joannes Peeters (1624-1677)

Philanthropist Jane Shallat, professor, novelist and artist Sabiha Al Khemir, and former district attorney Joanne Siegmund were elected to the New York museum’s board alongside KAWS. The contemporary artist’s personal collection has long placed a spotlight on Outsider art, one of the museum’s main focuses.

In 1981, Holladay opened the world’s only museum dedicated solely to the work of female artists, an interest that began after seeing the work of Flemish painter Clara Peeters, left out of “authoritative” art books. It today houses over 5000 works. Recipient of a National Medal of the Arts, she died aged 98. (Artforum)
