The New York Institution is hailing the acquisition of Giovanni Battista Moroni’s Portrait of a Woman the most significant Italian Renaissance painting museum has acquired in more than half a century. The 16th-century painting was a gift from Assadour O. Tavitian, a longtime board member, who died in 2020.

An exclusive character that has seduced, since it has just been sold at €83,424, double its high estimate, under the hammer of Deburaux-Du Plessis.

Coming on the market for the first time, this large still life by Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo is an eloquent example of the Baroque developments explored by Neapolitan painters in the second half of the 17th century.

The museum has announced the acquisition of a Study of a Male Bust in Profile by Giovanni Battista Crespi, known as Il Cerano (1573-1632), one of the great Lombard painters of the 17th century. This pierre noire and chalk on paper work was executed during the master's youth. The Louvre has only two of his drawings. 

An important painting by Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri (1589-1655), Lot and His Daughters, sold for €475,064 at Dorotheum on June 8, setting a new world record for a work by the Italian painter. The previous record, set at €410,550 under the hammer of Porro & Cie, dates back to 15 November 2003 (Artnet). 

This double-sided triptych by Giovanni Capassini is one of the very few works by the Florentine painter to appear at auction – over the past fifteen years, they could be counted on the fingers of one hand…
