The Swiss auction house is offering a group of works by Arp, Poliakoff, Delaunay, Fontana and Zao Wou-ki, which come from Maurice Denis's family. A remarkable pedigree that also stands out for this intimate painting by the artist.

Bringing in $6M overall, the popular auction featured Joseph Christian Leyendecker’s First Long Suit, the cover of Saturday Evening Post in 1937, which fetched $615,000 beating its estimate. Maurice Sendak’s 1988 25th anniversary painting for Where the Wild Things Are garnered $212,500 – beating his previous record.

Utrillo’s Avenue de Versailles et la Tour Eiffel, c. 1921 sold for the sum at a sale on April 17, organized by Maître Jean-Pierre Besch in Cannes. Utrillo (1883-1955), son of artist Suzanne Valadon, was a member of the École de Paris and one of the few well-known Montmartre painters who was actually born there.

Salomé Pirson and Marie-Laurence Tixier have joined forces to found Maurice Auction - a nod to Maurice Rheims. The auction house, located on avenue de la Boétie (Paris 8e), specializes in luxury items and art of the 20th and 21st centuries. On the menu for the first sale: a Parisian collection and fine wines.

A 1982 watercolor by Maurice Estève, a master of postwar French abstraction, will headline a selection of 20th-century art.
