Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957)

This auction will open with 11 pictures by the artist from a single provenance. They recall the importance and role Brancusi gave photography.

A court has ruled that Brancusi’s The Kiss may be removed from Paris’ Montparnasse Cemetery by the descendants of Russian student Tatiana Rachevskaïa, whose fiancé purchased it to honor her tombstone after her 1910 suicide. Her descendants hope to sell the sculpture, which is estimated at €50 M.

The two 20th-century giants expressed themselves in the works presented at this auction: one through the unexpected medium of photography, the other in drawings.

The 15-inch finger, found in the Louvre in 2018, had been misidentified as a toe, before being recognized by researcher Aurélia Azéma. Using a “non-invasive, reversible and invisible system,” it has now been restored “perfectly” to its rightful place. The statue is located in Rome’s Capitoline Museums. (Guardian)

The iconic sculpture by Brancusi adorning the tomb of Tatiana Rachewskaia has been the center of a legal battle for years. Classified as a historical monument in 2010, the family, who hoped to sell it at auction, challenged this decision. French courts recently upheld the ruling ensuring that the sculpture will stay. 

A new book, published by the Getty Research Institute, reconstructs the Los Angeles home of Louise and Walter Arensberg, offering an intimate portrait of their famous collection of modern and pre-Columbian art.
